A still from Walker’s experimental AR film, showing three robotic soldiers with rifles standing on a city sidewalk.

Although Apple only recently announced its new AR developer tool “ARKit”, developers using the beta version of the tool have already created some unique and exciting AR experiences. One of these is an experimental film from indie game maker Duncan Walker, which overlays robotic soldiers over real footage of city life.

According to Walker, the robotic characters were modeled using Unity, and ARKit was used to place them into the film. The results are surprisingly realistic, and Walker commented on Twitter that ARKit was “super easy to use”.

Another developer, Laan Labs, previously created a virtual measuring tape app, also using ARKit. Apple is expected to officially launch ARKit with iOS 11 later this year.
